The Importance Of A USCG Captain:
A Worry-Free Experience
On Lake Norman, the Marine Commission monitors all Charter/Excursion Boats, and actually requires operators to be US Coast Guard Master Captains!
For one to qualify, they must meet strict criteria including a minimum of 360 days of boating experience inland or 720 days of experience near coastal waters, pass the rigorous exams for a OUPV operators license and the subsequent Master Captains license upgrade, pass a mariners physical exam and drug test with background check, and complete approved CPR and first aid training.
If you are considering a boat rental or charter make sure that your Captain is a true United States Coast Guard Master Captain and ask to see his or her credential. Without a USCG Master Captain behind the helm, it may not be quite what you hoped for from a safety, liability, experience, and potentially legal standpoint should you be stopped on the water. The Marine Commission also enforces commercial insurance policies ensuring that you are protected and can enjoy the day worry free. Don't put yourself and friends at risk for potential danger or a situation breaking Maritime Law!
Captain Matt has been an avid outdoorsman his entire life. Growing up in a family of fishermen, Matt's appreciation for the outdoors and a respect for mother nature were cultivated at a young age. With over 1,000 days of sea service and hundreds of safe and fun charters completed day and night on LKN, Matt’s vast experience allows you to feel safe while you enjoy your best lake day.
After living in North Carolina for over a decade, Matt joined Carolina Cruising Charters full-time in 2021. His passions for boating and entertaining were rekindled on inland waterways where forces of nature such as ocean currents and saltwater are no longer at play. Matt calls Lake Norman home and wants to show all LKN offers!
